 D-Link DES-1228P 24-Port Web Smart Network Switch
Managing small to medium business networks becomes an easier task with a cost-effective device like the D-Link DES-1228P 24-Port Web Smart Switch. It handles basic network requirements such as QoS prioritization, VLAN segmentation and protective 802.1x authentication in a friendly graphical user interface or GUI. The DES-1228P Web Smart has 24 10/100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet ports, 4 1000BASE-T ports, plus 2 combo ports that can work for either copper or fiber Gigabit connections. The 24 Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) ports can power PD devices like phones, APs and cameras with up to 15.4 watts. The GUI simplifies QoS implementation and other management tasks without the complexity of other switches.
D-Link Safeguard Engine
The D-Link DES-1228 integrates a Safeguard Engine that protects the switch's central processing unit by readily identifying any threats and taking corrective action. The Safeguard Engine detects any Denial of Service (DoS) attack right away to prevent the system from overloading. Thus, congestion is avoided and network integrity is maintained.
IEEE 802.3af PoE
The 24 1/100BASE-TX ports on the DES-1228P supports the IEEE 802.3af Power-over-Ethernet protocol. These PoE ports, with a total budget of 170 watts, are able to supply up to 15.4W of power to compliant devices. This effectively reduces cable clutter by enabling devices to be powered through the network instead of using conventional wall outlets. A PoE adapter like D-Link's DWL-P50 also allows you to power devices not compliant to IEEE 802.3af.
Port Trunking
With the DES-1228P Web Smart, you can trunk up to 6 groups of 8 ports for each switch. Trunking ports lets you share load in multi-link within the network. Link aggregation helps to eradicate bottlenecks between cascaded switches so that the network can be expanded.
802.1Q VLANs
D-Link DES-1228P efficiently manages bandwidth utilization in your network with 802.1Q VLAN support. VLANs segment broadcast domains to lessen congestion in the channels. At the same time, segmented domains get added security because you can restrict access to individual segments. This segmentation is especially useful for departmental networking in offices.
SNMP Management
The SNMP Management tool that comes with the DES-1228P Network Switch facilitates polling of the network to log critical data regarding the unit's status. This helps detect any irregularities so you can do preventive maintenance that will prove to be cost-effective in the long run.
802.1p Priority Tagging
DES-1228P features 802.1p tagging so you can set frame prioritization from 0-7.
While port-based QoS prioritizes different tagged frames with the same value, a 802.1p device varies prioritization according their tags. This can apply to VoIP networks for instance, wherein you can tag voice traffic with a higher priority so that you keep it clear and jitter-free.
802.1D Spanning Tree
The 802.1D Spanning Tree is a feature that protects your network from unwanted cable loops that leave an unending circulation of broadcast and multicast signals obstructing bandwidth. Spanning Tree protection detects and cuts these to minimize network downtime.
IGMP Snooping
IGMP Snooping is utilized by DES-1228P Web Smart to monitor and identify individual members of a multicast scenario. The switch then intelligently forwards packets of such multicast information to these workstations without crowding network bandwidth. This application is ideal for streaming packets of audio and video content to multiple users within the network.
802.1x Authentication
Your D-Link Web Smart enjoys 802.1x Authentication, a feature that secures access to the network via the individual member workstations. Used with a RADIUS server, 802.1x will ask each user connected to the DES-1228 Web Smart Switch to enter a username and password before allowing access to the network.
