The Bose® Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system is engineered to deliver the excitement of surround sound content right at your computer—without the clutter of five speakers. At first I was skeptical in buying a $400 computer sound system. I read the instruction manual and noticed it's compatability with Mac which turned me on to it. I have a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and Windows 7. After setting everything up both OS recognized the system. If you think you're $50 set of speakers puts out sound you should hear this one! Wow! True 5.1 quality. Now I'm happy I made the $400 purchase. If you're having problems with Vista the speakers work great on Windows 7 if you're considering an upgrade.

At first I was very impressed but quickly started running into problems. The speakers would simply stop working for no reason. Did a quick google and found many people were having the same problem and it appears to be an issue with Vista. Others have tried to contact Bose and Microsoft and they simply point fingers at each other with no resolution. I am always needing to unplug the USB cable, wait, and then plug it back in. Even then it sometimes does not fix the problem. When they work, they sound great. You would expect something that cost this much and provides such a simple function to work properly! What a joke.

THESE ARE VERY GOOD SPEAKERS,WAY OVERPRICED CONSIDERING THAT THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT FOR $399 YOU COULDN'T PAY AMERICANS TO MAKE THEM, AND STILL MAKE A PROFIT

Up graded from the companion 3 series 2 to the companion 5 and as always Bose is the best the price may be a little much but you are investing in quality that you will keep for years to come.
Best speakers out there!!!

I am running Vista 64 bit and at first I had the same problem with the crackling and shuting off. I have had these speakers for over a year now and they have not given me any problems after I updated my bios(ASUS) to the latest update. Before you write a review claiming these speakers don't work, you should try fixing your computer first. HINT HINT!!!
