All-in-one systems

Receiver/speaker-only systems

This is just what it sounds like—a receiver and a set of surround sound speakers. With a wider array of connection options, this is a good choice for someone who already has a DVD player or plans on buying one separately. This can be a very affordable and convenient option. Alternately, consider building your own system from separate components—the extra connection options and improved sound quality will be worth the effort.

Integrated systems

With a combined DVD player/receiver and a set of surround sound speakers, an integrated system is great for the person who doesn't have a lot of space or doesn't already own a DVD player. Integrated systems are easy to use, stylish and include the most popular features and technologies. Many play CDs as well, and some even include built-in VCRs. An integrated system is also a great option if you want the home theater experience in a bedroom or other area.

Receiver/DVD systems

This is similar to an integrated system, except that the DVD player and receiver are two separate components. These systems are ideal for the person who doesn't already own any audio/video products but may want to add more pieces or upgrade their DVD player or receiver down the road. This kind of system usually offers more power, added flexibility and better sound than an integrated system.
