Choosing a satellite radioSatellite radio offers coast-to-coast coverage, loads of commercial-free music and unique programming you won't find on FM stations. When it comes to shopping for satellite radio, there are two main factors to consider: listening location and subscription service. Where do you want to listen?
Handheld receiversIf you’re constantly on the move, you want a receiver that goes where you go—new handheld units can receive the satellite signal almost anywhere, and have MP3 capability as well. The SIRIUS Stiletto 2 can store up to 2GB of music from your private collection, or you can download music and programming directly from the live feed. You can even listen to SIRIUS internet radio over any available WiFi network. If you prefer XM programming, check out the XM inno. Whether you’re traveling across the country, out for a drive or just walking the dog, these receivers can keep up.
Plug and playIf you want a satellite receiver that transfers easily from your car to your home, a plug-and-play satellite radio like the SIRIUS Sportster 5 or the XM Xpress may be right for you. This type of receiver lets you listen through your existing home theater system or in-dash player with a home or car kit (sold separately). Each kit includes a docking cradle that holds the satellite radio receiver in place and connects it to the power supply and antenna. The screens on plug and play units are bigger for ease of use in the car. Many plug-and-play receivers also have boomboxes available that let you enjoy satellite radio by the pool or at the beach.
Dedicated car satellite radiosMany in-dash players offer built-in satellite radio compatibility for a simple, all-in-one solution. There are no wires or docking cradles involved, but rather a direct connection which improves sound fidelity. Systems like the XM Mini Tuner with Car Kit are controlled through your existing in-dash player. This makes it easier to control since in-dash players have larger screens to accommodate song titles. Others, like the SIRIUS Startmate 4 and the XM CommanderMT, work in addition to your in-dash player and maintain a separate LCD control panel. They include a remote control for easy operation, and you can mount the LCD anywhere on the dash. If you opt for a dedicated satellite radio in your car, you’ll want a professional installation.
![]() Dedicated home satellite radioAudiophiles will want to take a look at a dedicated home satellite receiver. These units offer built-in digital circuitry to deliver crisp, clear sound, and the digital outputs make it easy to connect to your home theater system. Just like in-dash players, many home receivers now come satellite radio-ready, and will display artist, track and channel information on your TV so you can see what's playing from anywhere in the room. Pick your serviceBoth XM and SIRIUS offer tons of great programming, including college and professional sports coverage, top talk personalities and commercial-free music.
