D-Link 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure

Features

Share files: The D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure enables you to share your documents, music, photos, and videos across your network and on the Internet so family members, friends, or employees can access them. You can also use this device to stream music, photos and videos to UPnP AV compatible network media players.

RAID 1 protection: The availability of four different hard drive modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1) allows you to choose the configuration best suited to your needs. Standard mode creates two separately accessible hard drives. JBOD combines both drives in linear fashion for maximum space efficiency. RAID 0 combines both drives in a ‘striped’ configuration, which provides the highest performance, RAID 1 causes the drives to mirror each other, providing maximum protection. If one drive fails while configured as RAID 1, the unaffected drive continues to function as a single drive until the failed drive is replaced. The new drive will then be remirrored, allowing the DNS-323 to return to its full protection.

Software included: The included CD contains D-Link’s Easy Search Utility, which allows you to easily locate the DNS-323 anywhere on the network. Once located, use the utility to map the hard drive(s) so they will appear in My Computer on your PC.

Backup/storage: This enclosure allows you to create a central network point for backing up valuable files and the built-in RAID 1 mirroring technology protects these files from drive failure. Included software allows the back up of valuable files from a computer to the DNS-323 manually, by a schedule, or in real-time.

literature is lacking but the unit was easy to set up. Unless they beef up the literature or you want to spend time on the phone I'd say this is not for a beginner computer user. I had no major problems and this is the first time I've ever used a product liek this. Very easy to add drives, get it up and running. Updating firmware was not bad either. USB print server is a little slow for me, but I see that as an added bonus anyway.

The DNS-323 is a great product. Intuitive in operation, quite and reliable.
But there is an issue with the included backup software. Every description I saw of the product, including the product box, say 'backup software included.' Well, it does not.It includes a 30 day evaluation only. Repeated contacts with customer services were fruitless. Most of the technical support people didn't even know there was a backup product in the box.
For that reason I'm rating ease of installation as poor.

This is my second Network Attached Storage (NAS) setup. Of all the entry level NAS units this was the best. It is made from a metal case with the 2 drive slots above the circuit board and a small fan that ports the air well around the board and the drives. The WEB Page interface/setup menus are very simple, and allows multiple users and group setups. The drives format to LInux and offer RAID type setups. It has Gigabit networking. I found it to be very fast and there is no file limit during transfers. Sleep mode for the unit can be remote controlled, even a turn-off command from the web menus. It is also very quiet, and will turn itself off to sleep mode in a few minutes depending on your sleep mode settings. Buy the fastest SATA drives for this unit to max out the speed. I am happy with it and bought another one.
