Decent piece of hardware for the price

I picked up one of these enclosures for a Segate 200 Gb Barracuda SATA drive that was the boot drive in a desktop. I needed to get data from the drive to my laptop while I wait for HP to come through with some repair parts for the desktop.

The enclosure is nicely designed. Installing the HD into the case was a snap. It fits snugly, probably to allow the aluminum case to dissipate the heat from the drive. The case gets slightly warm, but not overly so. I have no concerns about heat.

I had no trouble with the USB connection. WIN XP Home found it right away after I put the drive jumper on SLAVE instead of master. The drive transfers files fairly quickly so that wasn't a problem. I did find that after a while XP dropped its connection and the drive wasn't recognized but that was overcome simply by turning the drive off and then on again. This has happened maybe three times in four days of 18 hour a day use. It has not dropped the connection during any file transfers - only after long periods ofnot accessing it.

If you are the kind of person who needs complete written instructions on how to assemble things, this may be a bit intimidating as the instructions consist solely of several line drawings in step-by-step order. It doesn't take any technical know-how to assemble the drive inside the case so it wasn't a problem for me and shouldn't be for most. For WIN XP/Vista, there are no drivers to install.

All in all, it's was a great buy for $24.99 and it sure saved my butt.

I needed this to recover a friends data, before doing a restore, which will wipe the drive. Other stores had them for 50-70 bucks. This is the cheapest, ready for in-store pickup. It took just a couple of minutes to install it, per the 'picture' directions. Immediately recognized as usb, external drive. The case does get hot, and you need to use the external AC adapter, not just the USB. But, for the price, it's definitely doing it's job. I am simply copying the important docs over to another ext. drive.

No internal fan, could get hot. Otherwise no problems. Good looking case.
