Decent piece of hardware for the price

I picked up one of these enclosures for a Segate 200 Gb Barracuda SATA drive that was the boot drive in a desktop. I needed to get data from the drive to my laptop while I wait for HP to come through with some repair parts for the desktop.

The enclosure is nicely designed. Installing the HD into the case was a snap. It fits snugly, probably to allow the aluminum case to dissipate the heat from the drive. The case gets slightly warm, but not overly so. I have no concerns about heat.

I had no trouble with the USB connection. WIN XP Home found it right away after I put the drive jumper on SLAVE instead of master. The drive transfers files fairly quickly so that wasn't a problem. I did find that after a while XP dropped its connection and the drive wasn't recognized but that was overcome simply by turning the drive off and then on again. This has happened maybe three times in four days of 18 hour a day use. It has not dropped the connection during any file transfers - only after long periods ofnot accessing it.

If you are the kind of person who needs complete written instructions on how to assemble things, this may be a bit intimidating as the instructions consist solely of several line drawings in step-by-step order. It doesn't take any technical know-how to assemble the drive inside the case so it wasn't a problem for me and shouldn't be for most. For WIN XP/Vista, there are no drivers to install.

All in all, it's was a great buy for $24.99 and it sure saved my butt.

Going 2 buy 2 more. The first 3 cost me $39.99 each. Now they are on sale for $19.99 each. Get them while they are on sale!
When formatting a 500 GB to 1TB hard drive just make sure the enclosure is not enclosed. In other words give it some room to breathe. What I like about having more than one is that I use only 1 USB wire and 1 power plug.

I was running a Maxtor Onetouch III Turbo, when it failed out on me completely. I did some research and some people recommended to take it out of the enclosure and put into a new enclosure. The hard drives were configured in a mirror raid to protect me insituations like this, so this had to work. I put one hard drive in the Antec enclosure, my MAC detected it, but thought it was a new drive and wanted to format it. Since I was after the data on the drive, that as not an option. I figured I would try thesecond drive instead and my OS was able to instantly detect it. It was like the Onetouch never failed. All my files were their. What a life saver. Sure I had to pay full retail price on it, but when your in a pickle, you do pay what it takes. It does getpretty hot, I just make sure I just undock it and power it off when not in use.
