Play music: Store and play lots of music in today's most popular file formats—up to 1,000 songs. Play the most popular music files such as MP3, WAV, WMA and protected WMA. Easily organize songs with the enhanced ARCLibrary, customizing your view by artist, album and type of music.

Watch videos: Enjoy a large variety of video files—up to two full-length movies—including MPEG-4, WMV, and protected WMV. You can also enjoy MPEG-2, VOB, or H.264 with optional plug-ins—even the movies you shot on your camcorder.

Record external video: Transform your Archos 405 into a digital video recorder with the optional DVR station. Record TV or most video sources such as satellite/cable box, VCR, DVD player or camcorder in MPEG-4 format.

Compatibility problems with Vista

The drivers are imbedded in the device's flash drive which is supposedly recognizable by any PC. I may be the unlucky one whose PC can't recognize the device. There are no available drivers online for this device yet. Not even on the Archos site! Andthe Archos Tech Support's recommendation is to return it. So back to the store it goes. >SIGH!<

The hardware itself is better than good. The video quality is very good with barely any glare even with the protective plastic on. It is very light weightand can fit on your pocket without a problem (not recommnded). Audio is ok. Learning the control interface may take a little time and is quirky. Cant say much for its durability I only had it for less than a day.

These folks must have bought a different machine. The 405 is a classic design....slightly chunky and oozes class. Video runs perfectly, screen is super, definitionis sharp, motion transfer is good. Real easy to use...just drag and drop from your PC onto the internal memory or the card. Battery recharge is slow...so do it overnight. No problemo.
Next thing is the docking station. Download HDDVDs and play on my TV screen.

Bought this for my 10 year old so she could listen to music and watch movies. I don't like that you have to buy plug-ins for several audio and video formats. I would pay $20 for all of the plug-ins, but not $20 each. To really use this as it is, you needto have a video converter. There are lots of free ones on the net if you look hard enough. Good quality movies need to be at least 600 megabytes at 320x240 resolution so get an SD card while your at it. The video quality is really good and the menu is easy to use. My daughter figured it out rather quickly. The sound is less than fair. I have adjusted the EQ but the sound is still dull. Probably the biggest con is that the volume is not very loud at its highest setting. It might be better with higher quality earbuds with a high sensativity spec. Depending on your listening habits this could be a pro or con? I found it much easier to transfer music and movies in the hard drive mode. Windows Media Player was way to confusing. Just drag and drop files to the player and your off and runnin. Some reviewers are saying the iPod is better, it probably is but look at how much your going to pay for a video iPod, with a smaller screen, then tell me which one is better. Overall I really like this unit.
