Good Cheap Router

Well, I plugged it in ... and ... well ..., it worked!!! My old Linksys BEFSR41 had recently died, so I needed to get a replacement. I could have gotten a Linksys BEFSR11 for $25 from a friend. (basically identical to the BEFSR41, but with only one LANport, which is fine, since I had the old one connected to an 8-port switch) However, I sometime run some network games on my local LAN, so it's nice to have static IP's for a few computers and dynamic for others. I could never get the old Linksys to useboth dynamic and static IP's, so I elected to pass on the BEFSR11 and either go with a new Linksys (WRT54G) or a cheap D-Link (DI-604,which nobody had in stock). Everywhere I looked had this EBR-2310, but I couldn't find any data or reviews on it. So,I'm adding this review.
Anyway, I plugged this in and it worked from the beginning. No configuration whatsoever! All 6 computers as well as my print server were able to get dynamic IP's from the DHCP server on the router. Also, my wife was able to VPN to work without any drops or problems of any kind!
By the way, there was a cardboard cutout covering all the ports in the back of the router, which says in big letters--'RUN CD FIRST!' I had read from a couple of reviews of some other D-Linkrouters, where the configuration CD actually mis-configured a router that was already working out of the box. So, I wasn't brave enough to run that CD. I really don't think it is necessary, if you have any idea what you are doing.
Another thing I hated about the old Linksys router was that its default IP was 192.168.1.1. To keep things simple, I attempted to change the old router to 192.168.1.101 and use static IP's of 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.5 and then use DHCP for all additional PC's. The oldLinksys wouldn't have anything to do with that. I was able to configure the EBR-2310 exactly the way I wanted without a single hitch!!
Finally, I was really interested in the VCT (Virtual Cable Test) feature of this router. By logging on as admin tothe router's web configuration utility, you can check all cables connected to the LAN or WAN ports of the router. The only minus I'd give for this router is that its web-based configuration screen could be better organized.
All in all an excellent value!

Linux and XP share a connection
Review posted on Nov 22, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I needed to share an internet connection between Linux and XP. D-Link is the answer. The trick (for DSL) is resetting the modem and few simple configuration changes in your browser. Had it working in 30 minutes. Hint: call your ISP for free help. Oneof the large(est) DSL providers in the US will walk you through the process.

Low Cost, Easily Installed, Dependable Router
Review posted on Aug 25, 2008

Purchased this to replace a Linksys router. Wanted another Linksys but model was out of stock and could not wait. Although we were apprehensive about buying a product that was so low cost and not as well known, so far it has performed very well and we arepleased with it. Installation was fast and simple using the included software. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.
