Very limited set up was a nightmare good sound, though

Well -- the list of connections that this receiver has is VERY deceiving. You can have at most three video sources (excluding the AUX composite inputs on the front, which are designed for a camera), and that's it, even though there are at least eight video connections. You see, when you use a component or HDMI input, you must reassign one of the 'input selectors' to that port, making the other types of input inaccessible. For example, if you hook up a blu-ray player to an HDMI port, you must assign one ofthe three composite/S-video identifiers (DVD, VCR, or Cable/Satellite) to that port. You then cannot use the composite/S-video connectors. All three types of connector are mutually exclusive, something that isn't clear from the description of this product. I have FOUR video sources. So what in the world do I do with the fourth one? (I've run the VCR cable to the front of the machine to use the 'AUX' connector, an inelegant solution at best.) It took two days to get the speakers working. Why? Because it'sburied on page 38 in the manual that there's a setting that has to be changed if you are using an optical audio cable with the first HDMI port. (It defaults to a coaxial digital audio cable.) Now that it's all set up and working, it works very well. Sound quality is excellent, especially from the blu-ray player. It's a good low-end receiver, if you understand its limitations and can live with them.

I really like Onkyo products, but don't be fooled with the 'HDMI pass-through'. It does not support both video and audio via HDMI. The whole purpose of having an HDMI cable is to have 1 cable for audio and video signals. My reason for buying a new receiver was to use just the HDMI cable and nothing else, so don't waste your time looking at this one, buy the TX-RS576b instead. The rest of the equipment worked fine, but I just don't understand why they would market this unit as HDMI. (it is like buyinga car without and engine, but saying that everything works) Shame on Onkyo

Found this product to be an excellent audio receiver. Loved the fact that it could do autosetup of speakers using Audissy. I currently use this only as a pure audio receiver with high end speakers.
