S-video outputs: This jack allows the source device to send a high-resolution signal to another unit such as a TV.

S-video inputs: This round connector carries video only, no audio, and while it will give you better picture quality than a Composite connection it is still limited to 480i resolution and cannot pass high-definition.

Audio outputs: Audio outputs allow you to send an audio signal to TVs, HDTV monitors, and audio receivers.

Audio inputs: These output jacks allow you to send an audio signal to TVs, HDTV monitors, and audio receivers. The more audio outputs a HDTV receiver has, the greater the connection flexibility you will have.

RF inputs: These are threaded posts that allow connection of RF cables, commonly used by cable, satellite and antenna. RF cables can be used to connect VCRs, cable boxes, and satellite receivers, but will not provide the best picture or sound.

Firewire: FireWire (or IEEE 1394) is a type of data transfer. Devices with FireWire output can transfer footage directly to a PC with a compatible cable.

USB port: USB is a standard connection port on most PCs. This will allow you to quickly and easily connect and sync the device with your computer.

Auto commercial skip: Some DVRs are able to recognize the beginnings and endings of commercial breaks and will allow you to skip all commercials.

Remote control: Indicates a remote control is packaged with the unit for remote operation.
