Features

Full HD 1080: There are a lot of ways to define high-definition, but Bravia Full HD means you’re getting the best resolution that high-definition has to offer. With Sony Bravia XBR HDTVs, Full HD 1080 means 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1080p video inputs.

1920 x 1080 panel resolution: Full HD 1920 x 1080 panel resolution with over 2 million pixels (more than twice that of 720p HDTV) is exactly what you need to reproduce the 1080p content that can be delivered by the cutting edge 1080p Blu-ray disc player. When working with Bravia Engine PRO, everything from standard definition to high definition is upconverted to 1080p for a picture so real it’s like you’re actually there.

Motionflow 120 Hz frame rate: Achieving smoother, natural motion reproduction starts with the right performance characteristics such as the ultra-fast panel response times Bravia HD LCD TVs have. Sony's Motionflow High Frame Rate technology doubles the amount of frames from 60fps to 120fps, and does it the right way by using real-time calculation of every single frame of video to create entire new frames of information.

10-bit processing and display: Sony follows 10-bit processing with a 10-bit panel that, compared to an 8-bit panel, supports 64 times the levels of color expression. The bottom line: smoother transitions from color to color and subtle, faithfully-reproduced color changes.

Bravia Engine PRO: Sony improved on the great benefits of the Bravia Engine in the XBR4 by adding a picture quality enhancement circuit called Digital Reality Creation Multi-function v2.5. It now has the added ability to process interlaced and progressive video signals and because it has twice the processing power of previous DRC-MF circuits, it can do its processing and output them to 1080p. Add to this the crisp details, outstanding contrast, eye popping colors, and dramatically reduced digital artifacts that DRC-MF circuitry is known for. And the best part of all is that DRC-MF v.2.5 is user-adjustable according to the video source.

Live Color Creation™: Live Color Creation starts with the Bravia Engine PRO video processing system, which enhances primary colors and corrects half-tone colors for natural overall color. Next, a WCG-CCFL backlight using Sony’s phosphor formula delivers a specific spectrum of light designed to work with our specially formulated color filters. The combination of these three components creates deep blues and natural greens for overall colors that draw you right into the picture.

x.v.Color technology: 1.8 times as many natural colors as existing HDTV signals will now be faithfully reproduced. x.v.Color is the name Sony has chosen to promote video products that include xvYCC capability. x.v.Color enabled products can now offer more accurate color reproduction and natural colors.

Manufacturer's description

Sony 40" Bravia XBR-Series LCD HDTV

40" BRAVIA® XBR® series LCD Flat Panel HDTV
Over the years XBR has stood for the best consumer TV's Sony has to offer and this year's line up is no exception. The XBR line of Full HD 1080p televisions incorporate all of Sony's latest technologies (including HDMI v1.3 features such as x.v.Color and Deep Color). Additional features like Motionflow™ 120Hz enable smoother motion when viewing movies or fast-action sports. BRAVIA Engine PRO with Digital Reality Creation upconverts all interlaced and progressive video signals including HD signals directly to 1080p for amazing detail and sharpness. And it's only fitting that your XBR make a statement not only through breathtaking picture quality, but by taking your breath away with optional color bezels. Now your LCD TV can be as distinct as your own personal style.

Full HD 1080
There are a lot of ways to define high-definition but BRAVIA® Full HD means you’re getting the best resolution that high-definition has to offer consumers. With Sony BRAVIA XBR HDTVs, Full HD 1080 means 1920 x 1080 pixels5 and 1080p video inputs. Your lifestyle demands the best in high-definition and with BRAVIA Full HD 1080 products you get it.

1920 x 1080 Native Panel Resolution
When it comes to high-definition TV the pinnacle of performance is achieved by using 1920 x 1080 display panels. Full HD 1920 x 1080 panel resolution with over 2 million pixels 5(more than twice that of 720p HDTV) is exactly what you need to reproduce the 1080p content that can be delivered by our cutting edge 1080p Blu-ray disc™ player.

10-bit Processing and 10-bit Display
While it's great to state that a TV is capable of creating billions of colors it's a whole lot better when you have a display that can actually display them. That's the logic behind Sony's 10-bit processor and 10-bit display. Sony follows 10-bit processing with a 10-bit panel, allowing 64 times the levels of color expression than an 8-bit panel. What that translates to is smoother transitions from color to color and subtle color changes faithfully reproduced.

Motionflow™ 120 Hz with Full HD high frame rate capability
Taking motion performance to the next level requires innovation and expertise. Enter Sony's Motionflow™ High Frame Rate technology. Motionflow™ detects the incoming video signal and applies the appropriate processing for optimum motion reproduction. Taking full advantage of film sourced 24fps encoded content available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, Motionflow™ eliminates the need for 3:2 pulldown and delivers smooth, judder free video, faithfully preserving the integrity of the original film. When 60fps content is detected, Motionflow™ doubles the amount of frames and uses real-time calculation to create a new level of natural motion reproduction. You'll experience movies and sports with a greater sense of realism than ever before.

BRAVIA Engine™ PRO Full Digital Video Processor
BRAVIA Engine™ PRO builds upon the BRAVIA Engine system's outstanding video processing functions making it Sony's most advanced video processing system. It is the culmination of our legendary picture quality expertise, featuring the latest generation of proprietary video processing technology: Digital Reality Creation - Multi Function (DRC-MFv2.5). This technology creates a high-density video signal that traditional interpolation video processing cannot achieve. This latest generation of DRC-MF features increased processing power and provides a sharp, crystal clear image with both 480i and 480p standard definition and all high definition sources (except 1080p). It also features "1080p Direct Creation" which minimizes loss in interlace-to-progressive (IP) conversion by performing Digital Reality Creation and IP Creation algorithms simultaneously.

Live Color Creation™ System featuring WCG-CCFL
Many colors in the real world such as deep reds, greens and clear blues cannot be expressed with conventional display technologies. Working in combination with the special WCG-CCFL backlight in LCD HDTVs or the optical engine in our MDPJ HDTVs, Live Color Creation technology achieves wide color reproduction using advanced chroma signal processing algorithms. The primary benefits are clear blues, natural greens and an overall vibrant color for all scenes.

The best set, in more ways than one

I bought this set from circuit city first one at the store.
At just over 65 lbs, it was easy to move. The set up was very eay to understand. I set this up myself, the hdmi connection is great.

Picture exceeded my high expectations it's really like looking out a window with HD. Even non-hd signals look great. Plus, it's really easy to change the picture aspect to fit the signal. which is real time fun.

The sound is the best I have heard from a TV, certainly a SONY TV. They really put ome decent sound technology into this TV. And it can be adjusted based on your taste with dynamic, standard, etc.

The base is very solid, so I am not worried about my kids pushing this set over. Really solid. I though about wall mounting it, but so far decided against it.

the set has a stainless stell rail around the glass bevel, really lick and stylish. I plyed my playstation 2 on this, and it was insane. I have to get a wii now.

While pricy, it is a great set at any price

Very Happy

I bought the 40' Bravia XBR together with a PS3. The picture is great! I haven't connected it to my roof antenna yet so I haven't experienced full, uncompressed HDTV on this TV yet. I am sure it will be awesome based on what I have seen watching Blue-Raymovies off the PS3 using the HDMI connection.

Standard definition is not good. It is barely watchable but that is understandable. This TV was not designed for SD.

I am still looking into if there is a way I can control the PS3 Blue-Ray player with theBravia remote control. Probably can't since the PS3 controller seems to be Blue-Tooth only and the Bravia remote is Infra-Red.

The frame with the lucite and the silver metal around the perimeter looks nice (and adds to the size of the unit) but it may look dated soon. I wish this top of the line XBR had a plain black frame option.

On-screen menu is set up just like the PS3 is. Fairly easy to negotiate.

Even with discounts this set was expensive. There are probably better cost-benefit ratio TV's out there but I can rest assured this is one of the best HDTV's on the market according to many sources including CNET.

This set is Energy Star rated which is a plus.

Great Product

To me the most important feature is the picture quality. You can see it in the stores, the picture on this Sony is superior to any other set except perhaps the top of the line Samsung. The problem with the Samsung is that they use a glossy finish on thescreen which increases contrast in low light situations. This results in glare when the sun shines. The Sony, with it's flat finish screen doesn't have this problem..
With it's 120Mhz refresh rate there is never any problem with blurred action scenes.
The sound is not great, but I don't think any of these sets offer great sound. To really enjoy the theatre experience, you have to get a seperate surrond sound system.
