For the price it would be difficult to find a better pair of bookshelf speakers. I also considered a pair of Polk M10's. After listening to both side by side, I thought that the Sony's sounded just as good as, if not better than the polks! Despite their small size the sound quality and range is very good. The highs and mid-tones are very crisp and clean. Bass output is not bad for their size. It's clear, not muddy at all. To complete the package and improve the overall sound, I have these paired up with the Sony SA-W2500 10' sub. This combination sounds pretty good together.
The one thing that Sony could have done to improve the design would be to attach a bracket on the back for wall mounting. Other than that, it's a great little speaker. I defiantly recommend them.

Good price for great sounding speakers

I initially bought these speakers to add to my sony 700watt 7.1 channel receiver (since i didn't have enough speakers to fill all the speaker slots) for the front speakers but i later bought the larger pair with 8 inch woofer and moved these to the rear channel. I was impressed with the sound quality they put out. I have a pair of klipsch 6.5' and a pair of polk 6.5' bookshelf speakers that are about 12 years old now and these speakers were just as good as. They didn't have quite as much bass because of the smaller woofer size. I even hooked them up to my sony car amp and used for tailgating when i didn't want and much bass and they still rocked out. Great speakers for only 50 a pair

I needed a couple of speakers for my computer as one of my old ones had ceased working. As I feed my computers sound output into an old Kenwood amplifier, I need speakers that will cater with the output without breaking the bank.

The Sony's certainly deliver the goods.
Bass is fine for bookshelf speakers, vocals are clear and neutral and the treble has presence without too much fizz.

Build quality is good and the forward firing bass port means that the speakers can be placed right up against a wall. Important for book shelf speakers. The other benefit of a forward facing port is that the speakers are less easily influenced by objects around and behind.

Aesthetically speaking the speakers are unobtrusive. It would be nice to have had an option other than black, but that really is nit-picking.

I am set to move house soon and having seen the layout of my new living room then I will be buying a brace of these to provide surround sound.

In summary the Sony SSB-1000's deliver excellent natural sound thatis genuinely comparable with, if not better than, bookshelf speakers selling at three times the price. A true bargain!
