Uniden Dual Mode Specialty Internet Cordless Phone

Dual-mode Internet phone: This phone lets you make free PC-to-PC calls to other Windows Live Messenger users as well as low-cost Internet calls to regular phone numbers via Windows Live web calling. Creating a Windows Live Messenger account is easy to do, the downloadable software is free, and there's no activation fee. Whenever you like, switch modes and make regular phone calls through a standard land line.

5.8GHz digital system: This digital spread-spectrum technology offers the best available performance with increased sound quality, enhanced range and heightened security. This system is WiFi friendly, and won’t interfere with 802.11b or 802.11g wireless networks.

Calling features: Staying in touch was never so easy. Use the 100-name/number phonebook directory to create convenient phonebook groups. Ten speed-dial numbers let you make a call in a flash. And the 100-name/number caller ID memory with alphabetical sort lets you track calls effortlessly.

Call conferencing: This phone can manage 3-way conferencing with both Live Messenger and land line calls.

Personalize your phone: Customize this phone to match your personality. Personalize the handset banner and wallpaper. Or choose from 15 ringtones and ten polyphonic ringer melodies.

Live Messenger features: Download your Messenger contact list to your handset's phonebook. See your Messenger contacts and their status directly on handset. And get notifications of emails, contacts coming online and instant messages.

Note: Internet calls require a Windows Live Messenger account.

I purchased this phone half expecting to return it fearing it would not live up to my expectations. Not going to happen!

The WIN1200 has become my current favorite toy. It does everything it is supposed to, and does them well.

Its VOIP calls using Windows Live Messenger is fine -- comparable to using a good headset, better than using mic and speakers.

This is my first DIGITAL cordless phone -- all the other cordless phones in the house are ANALOG cordless. Digital is better in terms of both range and voice quality.

This unit is begging to send and receive instant messages -- it will not! It only communicates alerts (of contacts coming online, messages received, e-mail received, news alerts received). Unfortunately, the alerts appear for only a few seconds and then disappear it would be nice to be able to pull them up later but that is not possible. You can see how many e-mails are unread in your inbox, but not who they are from. The e-mail alert when it arrives, however, provides the senders name for the lengh of time it remains on the screen.

One problem with the phone is that the news alert function is pretty useless -- you only receive the first few words (far fewer than you see in the Messenger pop-up on your computer). Basically, all youknow is that something happened and you need to go to your computer if you are curious enough to find out what it was.

The navigation between VOIP and landline is a bit of a challenge at first. But if you are patient enough to read and understand the well-written user manual, in no time navigation becomes almost second nature.

As you can tell, I like this phone a lot. This review is being written with about a week of experience, but I really don't believe anything will change.

Of course, because oftechnology, in several months there will probably be an upgraded version (that does a complete job of IM, for example) at less cost. But that is nothing new :-)

For now I am very satisfied.

This phone is good except its really small ringtone that u cant hear if u are sitting next to the phone.
